Winfield Replica Race Car

The inspiration for the build of this car came from my desire to own an i.s. When they came out in 1991 or 1992 I use to do the PDI(pre-delivery inspections) on these cars at Stuart Bromfield Motors which later became known as Lyndhurst Auto.

In June 2008 I decided to purchase a 318 E30 2door body shell. I then stripped it down and sent it to the panel beaters. From the word go I knew I wanted to make it a replica Winfield car. The car was sprayed red and then sent off to Tom at TNT to do the roll cage.

Whilst at TNT I sourced the I.S body kit from three different people in the Junk mail.

The suspension was done by Ted at Afrishox. I decided to have coil overs made up for the front with camber plates and the rear was left pretty much standard with adjustable camber.

While the car was away I worked on the engine:

  • Used M3 3lt Cranckshaft
  • 325 Conrods
  • Ross Pistons with the exact I.S squish
  • Head was ported and flowed by Van de Linde
  • 288 degree camshaft from Van de Linde

To this day the motor has never been opened or repaired. It only runs on Liqui Moly Race Tech 10w60.

With the brakes I decided to go with Ronaldo. Four pot calipers.

The secret to this car is that it weighs 1000kgs. All the glass windows except the windscreen has been removed and replaced by plexi glass. We scrapped off all the rubberising. The bonnet and boot lid are both carbon fibre done by Corrie at Quality Composites.

The car debuted at Kyalami and the times where 2:04/2:05. We experienced problems with from day one with fuel surge. I got Marius from full boost to make an aluminium fuel cell to prevent the surge.

As a precautionary measure we made the oil sump bigger. This all resulted from the E30 forum track builds; Andreas build to be specific.

This track car will continue to change as we do each race. Will always want it to go faster.
